Composite materials made with carbon fiber or fabric as the reinforcement and resin, ceramic, metal, carbon, or rubber as the matrix are lightweight, strong, and elastic. They are used in electronics, environmental and energy, aerospace, industrial furnaces, and automotive fields.
Their key properties include high mechanical strength, elasticity, and toughness. They can withstand temperatures above 2000°C. With a density of only 1/5 that of steel, they are easy to handle and design for weight reduction. They also have a higher thermal conductivity than metals.
